Albuquerque

Landscaping and hardscaping in Albuquerque.

The whole city, and most of what it throws at a yard.

Albuquerque is not one landscaping problem, it is several. A 1950s bungalow near the university sits on different ground, with different water history, than a 2005 build on the west mesa. What works in one will fail in the other.

The constants are caliche, sun, and monsoon. Caliche does not drain — dig a planting hole in it and you have made a bucket. July sun on a west-facing wall will cook anything that is not chosen for it. And our rain does not arrive gently; it turns up all at once and goes wherever the grading sends it, which is a design decision whether or not anyone made it deliberately.

Most of the work here is conversion: turning thirsty, tired yard into gravel, stone, and hard surface that holds up without a water bill behind it. That means site prep, proper depth, woven fabric, and edges that stay where they were cut.

What it costs

Real numbers, before you call.

Most contractors make you book an appointment to find out whether you can afford them. These are honest ranges for the Albuquerque metro — enough to know where you stand.

  • Front-yard gravel or xeriscape conversion $2000–$3500
  • Paver walkway, around 40 linear feet $2000–$4500
  • One-time yard cleanup $400–$600

Every job gets an itemized written estimate before any work starts — labor, materials, and haul-off, line by line. The range is a guide; the estimate is the number.

What moves the price

  • How much has to come out first — old rock, sod, concrete, or roots
  • Access: whether a wheelbarrow fits through the gate, or everything goes by hand
  • Slope and drainage, which decide how much grading the base needs
  • Haul-off volume — debris is priced by what actually leaves the site
  • Material choice, which moves cost more than most people expect
